Totemic, from an office in a garage to global financial services.

All the best companies have humble beginnings and totemic Ltd is no exception.

Our roots have always been in financial services. Having started out as independent financial advisers we progressed to advising those in financial difficulty, in particular serving police officers, nurses, union members and members of the armed forces. We were innovative and instrumental in devising new schemes such as debt management plans. These plans have been copied by many but Payplan Ltd (part of the totemic Group) are one of the few companies who provide their services without charging a fee to clients. Payplan have always worked hard to maintain their links with the credit industry and outside advice agencies for the benefit of all concerned. Payplan Ltd now manages the debts of over 100,000 people and assists over 90,000 people a year who call their helplines.

Looking for ways to enhance our service and add value to what we do; the companies under the totemic umbrella have developed a range of services that also help our clients to restructure their outgoings and maintain their debt payments in nearly all eventualities. These include insurance reviews; mortgage advice; payment benefit for their debts; emergency cover for boiler and car breakdowns and short term life cover. Payplan's new arrears management team works closely with clients and their creditors to ensure that families can continue to stay in their homes wherever possible.

We have even devised our own unique payment and information system, PayplanPlus (previously known as Justabank), that allows clients to communicate with us online; receive information and review their debt payment plans, and find out about other products that may be of benefit throughout their debt arrangement - all in complete confidence and privacy whenever and wherever they wish.

Revenues from these additional services now form a major part of our business income.

We have a wealth of experience in personal financial management; creating bespoke systems and solutions and caring for our customers. We have grown significantly since our small beginnings over 20 years ago and now employ 790 people in the UK and over 250 in Lisbon, Portugal.

To build on this further we have increased our portfolio of financial products and services. Through Payplan Financial Services Ltd we will be offering these to clients nationally and internationally. We have already dipped our toes in the water with www.covermyboat.co.uk a boat insurance website providing good value insurance for boat owners. This will be extended to European customers soon.

Finally a word about our people. Without our dedicated and professional totemic colleagues there would be no company. Whilst we are a business we have always focused on the need to grow and nurture talent.
